Columbia Spectator: Considering Coulter | Columbia Spectator

  • countercoulter · 8 months ago
debate? hardly, more like virulent ranting--is there really anything to learn from her besides: "gays, immigrants, commies, liberals are bad"
  • shut it · 8 months ago
    freedom of speech buddy...
  • Lyndsey · 8 months ago
If that's what you think of Coulter, what did you think of Ahmadinejad's message on gays and Jews? Did you call that a "virulent rant" as well or did you consider it an educational pursuit? If the latter, why not the same for Coulter?
  • ugh. · 8 months ago
The difference is that Ahmadinejad is actually relevant as a world leader.

i love ann coulter and fully support her views. screw columbia's ultra-liberal slander

This is quite a strong editorial! I did not expect the staff to go so far as to say "students should show respect." Glad to see that the Spectator is upholding Columbia's principles.

Though I'm not sure it's true that Columbia students are only exposed to ideas to which they agree. But we're usually only taught to challenge certain beliefs, and that often doesn't cross over into understanding the red states.

Clearly, Coulter is pondscum, and from a very foul cesspool at that. The editors have it slightly wrong. Coulter doesn't deserve respect.

But what does deserve respect is her right to shoot her mouth off, a very different thing. It's vital to keep the distinction in mind.

    haha

I think the recusal is more telling than the editorial
  • Lyndsey · 8 months ago
Yeah, God forbid someone think the writer had journalistic integrity and respects all forms of free speech, that might damage his/her street cred.
  • Alec Jacobs · 8 months ago
Finally, liberals will treat a conservative speaker with some respect, assuming students follow the instruction of the editorial. Ask challenging questions, but at least allow her to speak.

Wondering why the person who has recused himself did so...not for free speech?

You mean you don't know ARIES? DO YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK?!
  • ad2397 · 8 months ago
Alec: I love free speech. Recusal was for conflict of interest.
  • Alec · 7 months ago
The editorial was not endorsing her political views, it was saying that she should be shown respect when speaking, as she is a leading political voice in this country.

You don't think a speaker hosted by an organization at your university should be given respect?
  • speccie · 8 months ago
isnt it spec policy to explain why adc recused?? it seems suspicious if they don't even if the reason is obvious

Thank god there is one place in this country that values debate and discussion. Opposition is fundamental to a free society and you kids would not be too happy if either right or left was able to silence the other side.

The more you disagree with Ms. Coulter, the more valuable it is for you to go listen to her viewpoints. The same goes for the conservatives among you when a liberal blows into town.

Sounds quite preachy for an editorial.
  • Somebody · 8 months ago
Sounds have had something similar when Ahmendinijad came.

I think this editorial is actually very wise lefty thinking. We all know Coultergeist gets her power by creating a diversion from the real discourse using wedge issues and bludgeons to attack her opponents. Giving her little notice and letting this pass without incident is about the most harm the liberals could do her. There is one more thing, however, which is to sign up for tickets and then not attend. It'd be pretty funny if she had to speak to a half empty room. Could her ego handle the blow?

If Columbia is an educational institution it is possible that some of the "open minds" will see that Ann Coulter does no more than what Jon Stewart does - she in books and articles, he on his cable TV show. They have their hilarious targets who they quote then ridicule. Both Stewart and Coulter are funny people. Stewart is no less mean than Coulter. Coulter is more tolerant and more rational than Stewart.

Columbia? School of Broadcasting? No. You said Columbia University! $40,000 a year to have my daughter's intellect challenged by Ann Coulter? The dumification of America is complete. Congratulations to all those anti-elitists who have worked so hard and long. YOU ARE THE WINNERS!
